Thinking the Unthinkable

I’m sharing this on my blog today because I believe this is a long overdue discussion that our country needs to have. It’s time to push aside all of the philosophical & political rhetoric and find a way to help these families & children. Please take the time to read & absorb every word of this mother’s cry for help!

In the wake of another horrific national tragedy, it’s easy to talk about guns. But it’s time to talk about mental illness.

Three days before 20 year-old Adam Lanza killed his mother, then opened fire on a classroom full of Connecticut kindergartners, my 13-year old son Michael (name changed) missed his bus because he was wearing the wrong color pants.

“I can wear these pants,” he said, his tone increasingly belligerent, the black-hole pupils of his eyes swallowing the blue irises.

“They are navy blue,” I told him. “Your school’s dress code says black or khaki pants only.”

“They told me I could wear these,” he insisted. “You’re a stupid bitch. I can wear whatever pants I want to. This is America. I have rights!”

“You can’t wear whatever pants you want to,” I said, my tone affable, reasonable. “And you definitely cannot call me a stupid bitch. You’re grounded from electronics for the rest of the day. Now get in the car, and I will take you to school.”

I live with a son who is mentally ill. I love my son. But he terrifies me.

A few weeks ago, Michael pulled a knife and threatened to kill me and then himself after I asked him to return his overdue library books. His 7 and 9 year old siblings knew the safety plan—they ran to the car and locked the doors before I even asked them to. I managed to get the knife from Michael, then methodically collected all the sharp objects in the house into a single Tupperware container that now travels with me. Through it all, he continued to scream insults at me and threaten to kill or hurt me.

That conflict ended with three burly police officers and a paramedic wrestling my son onto a gurney for an expensive ambulance ride to the local emergency room. The mental hospital didn’t have any beds that day, and Michael calmed down nicely in the ER, so they sent us home with a prescription for Zyprexa and a follow-up visit with a local pediatric psychiatrist.

We still don’t know what’s wrong with Michael. Autism spectrum, ADHD, Oppositional Defiant or Intermittent Explosive Disorder have all been tossed around at various meetings with probation officers and social workers and counselors and teachers and school administrators. He’s been on a slew of antipsychotic and mood altering pharmaceuticals, a Russian novel of behavioral plans. Nothing seems to work.

At the start of seventh grade, Michael was accepted to an accelerated program for highly gifted math and science students. His IQ is off the charts. When he’s in a good mood, he will gladly bend your ear on subjects ranging from Greek mythology to the differences between Einsteinian and Newtonian physics to Doctor Who. He’s in a good mood most of the time. But when he’s not, watch out. And it’s impossible to predict what will set him off.

Several weeks into his new junior high school, Michael began exhibiting increasingly odd and threatening behaviors at school. We decided to transfer him to the district’s most restrictive behavioral program, a contained school environment where children who can’t function in normal classrooms can access their right to free public babysitting from 7:30-1:50 Monday through Friday until they turn 18.

The morning of the pants incident, Michael continued to argue with me on the drive. He would occasionally apologize and seem remorseful. Right before we turned into his school parking lot, he said, “Look, Mom, I’m really sorry. Can I have video games back today?”

“No way,” I told him. “You cannot act the way you acted this morning and think you can get your electronic privileges back that quickly.”

His face turned cold, and his eyes were full of calculated rage. “Then I’m going to kill myself,” he said. “I’m going to jump out of this car right now and kill myself.”

That was it. After the knife incident, I told him that if he ever said those words again, I would take him straight to the mental hospital, no ifs, ands, or buts. I did not respond, except to pull the car into the opposite lane, turning left instead of right.

“Where are you taking me?” he said, suddenly worried. “Where are we going?”

“You know where we are going,” I replied.

“No! You can’t do that to me! You’re sending me to hell! You’re sending me straight to hell!”

I pulled up in front of the hospital, frantically waiving for one of the clinicians who happened to be standing outside. “Call the police,” I said. “Hurry.”\

Michael was in a full-blown fit by then, screaming and hitting. I hugged him close so he couldn’t escape from the car. He bit me several times and repeatedly jabbed his elbows into my rib cage. I’m still stronger than he is, but I won’t be for much longer.

The police came quickly and carried my son screaming and kicking into the bowels of the hospital. I started to shake, and tears filled my eyes as I filled out the paperwork—“Were there any difficulties with….at what age did your child….were there any problems with…has your child ever experienced…does your child have….”

At least we have health insurance now. I recently accepted a position with a local college, giving up my freelance career because when you have a kid like this, you need benefits. You’ll do anything for benefits. No individual insurance plan will cover this kind of thing.

For days, my son insisted that I was lying—that I made the whole thing up so that I could get rid of him. The first day, when I called to check up on him, he said, “I hate you. And I’m going to get my revenge as soon as I get out of here.”

By day three, he was my calm, sweet boy again, all apologies and promises to get better. I’ve heard those promises for years. I don’t believe them anymore.

On the intake form, under the question, “What are your expectations for treatment?” I wrote, “I need help.”

And I do. This problem is too big for me to handle on my own. Sometimes there are no good options. So you just pray for grace and trust that in hindsight, it will all make sense.

I am sharing this story because I am Adam Lanza’s mother. I am Dylan Klebold’s and Eric Harris’s mother. I am James Holmes’s mother. I am Jared Loughner’s mother. I am Seung-Hui Cho’s mother. And these boys—and their mothers—need help. In the wake of another horrific national tragedy, it’s easy to talk about guns. But it’s time to talk about mental illness.

According to Mother Jones, since 1982, 61 mass murders involving firearms have occurred throughout the country. (http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2012/07/mass-shootings-map). Of these, 43 of the killers were white males, and only one was a woman. Mother Jones focused on whether the killers obtained their guns legally (most did). But this highly visible sign of mental illness should lead us to consider how many people in the U.S. live in fear, like I do.

When I asked my son’s social worker about my options, he said that the only thing I could do was to get Michael charged with a crime. “If he’s back in the system, they’ll create a paper trail,” he said. “That’s the only way you’re ever going to get anything done. No one will pay attention to you unless you’ve got charges.”

I don’t believe my son belongs in jail. The chaotic environment exacerbates Michael’s sensitivity to sensory stimuli and doesn’t deal with the underlying pathology. But it seems like the United States is using prison as the solution of choice for mentally ill people. According to Human Rights Watch, the number of mentally ill inmates in U.S. prisons quadrupled from 2000 to 2006, and it continues to rise—in fact, the rate of inmate mental illness is five times greater (56 percent) than in the non-incarcerated population. (http://www.hrw.org/news/2006/09/05/us-number-mentally-ill-prisons-quadrupled)

With state-run treatment centers and hospitals shuttered, prison is now the last resort for the mentally ill—Rikers Island, the LA County Jail, and Cook County Jail in Illinois housed the nation’s largest treatment centers in 2011 (http://www.npr.org/2011/09/04/140167676/nations-jails-struggle-with-mentally-ill-prisoners)

No one wants to send a 13-year old genius who loves Harry Potter and his snuggle animal collection to jail. But our society, with its stigma on mental illness and its broken healthcare system, does not provide us with other options. Then another tortured soul shoots up a fast food restaurant. A mall. A kindergarten classroom. And we wring our hands and say, “Something must be done.”

I agree that something must be done. It’s time for a meaningful, nation-wide conversation about mental health. That’s the only way our nation can ever truly heal.

God help me. God help Michael. God help us all.

21 things God has been teaching me & reminding me of…

God is always speaking to us & trying to teach us new things – here are just a few of the things He has been teaching me & reminding me of lately…

1)No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived all that God has in store for those who love Him…” (1 Cor. 2:9) “You have no idea how HUGE I am & how HUGE my plans are!” We need to dream bigger dreams!

2) If God says to go after Moby Dick in a row boat with a pair of finger nail clippers – BRING THE TARTAR SAUCE BABY!

3) Right now God is at work… doing things that I am COMPLETELY unaware of… but will reap the results of when He thinks I am ready.

4) Someone addicted to routine and ritual will never be a change agent in God’s church! Find one in the Bible – go ahead – try!

5) God doesn’t need me… I need Him!  Desperately!

6) I am NOT the source of one single blessing in my life – GOD IS!!!

7) Balance is a myth! Look at Jesus or anyone God used in the Bible – their lives were completely out of balance in God’s direction.

8) When you play around with sin… there are always consequences! ALWAYS!

9) If I can accomplish “HIS vision” without HIS help ——- then it isn’t “HIS vision!”

10) Passive husbands and fathers suck! (Sorry! Just being honest about it!)

11) God leads me step by step – NOT in three to five year plans! Long range planning is for those who try to keep God in a box.

12) God is Sovereign and is not surprised by anything!

13) “DO NOT SETTLE!” EVER!

14) God often works through the “impossible” to accomplish the “unbelievable!”

15) The difficult we will do right now – the impossible may take a little while.

16) I need to live in faith… NOT in fear!

17) The key to continually taking my marriage to the next level is to stop seeking things from her – and to start going all out to serve her!

18) My responsibility as a leader is to set the next generation up for success.

19) So goes the leader–so goes the people.

20) I need to relax more & have fun more!!!

21) I can’t believe I get to do this (Lead Pastor of an awesome church) for a living!

Can’t wait to see what He says next!!!

I Am That Hero 5K – Only 19 Days Away!!!

EPC - Hero 5K - Billboard

We are now less than 3 WEEKS AWAY from the big event & there are many aspects of this that we need your help in getting done right away. Please make time to go through the items below & see what you can do…

1)      Sponsors, Sponsors, Sponsors! We need local businesses to become sponsors of our event. Here is a “EPC – Hero 5K – Sponsor Pack” to share with potential sponsors & a EPC – Tax ID – letter letter to show that all sponsorships & donations are tax-deductible. (Please talk with your own company & start hitting up other area businesses) ***ALSO – We need restaurants to be food sponsors (They set up a table & give away samples of their food & promote themselves. For doing this they get all the benefits of a $350 sponsorship)

2)      We need people the next 2 weekend to go to different 5K’s in our area & pass out postcards about our 5K to runners as they finish. (Preferably our people would be in superhero costumes while doing this) ***NOTE: If you can help with this contact Jason Adams right away – (678) 231-2091 or  jasonadams9@hotmail.com (4/13 CASA Superhero Run Woodstock, 4/13 Boulderdash 5k Cumming, 4/20 Runningnerds 5K Atlanta, 4/20 Sweetwater 5K Atlanta, 4/20 Run the River Roswell)

3)      Marketing & Promotion. Help us blow up social media about this, tell all your friends, co-workers, etc. Check out & “Like” our I Am That Hero 5K Facebook page & start sharing about this with your friends. Also – we need people to contact local community news outlets to let our community know & local news (papers, TV, radio) to cover the event.

4)      We need gift cards from restaurants, stores, movie theaters, etc to give away as “Thank You’s” to local heroes who attend our race. (So we will need A LOT of these!!!)

5)      We need items to give away to participants & to put in their goody bags. These could be running related, superhero related, or it could have no tie in whatsoever. (The more free stuff the better!) Get creative with ideas!

6)      We need people to visit local police stations, fire stations, hospitals, medical centers, military stations, etc – to ask them to come/bring a team, be a part of our event & allow our community to honor them. (We have posters, flyers & postcards at the church office)

7)      We need people to go to local stores, restaurants, etc to ask them to put up a poster promoting our race.

(We have Sponsor Info Packs, Posters, Registration forms, & postcards available at the church office)

We want this to be a huge, over-the-top event that people will be talking about & looking forward to the next one. Again, get creative & help us to that end.

***NOTE: We will have an All Volunteers Meeting this coming Sunday 4/14 (right after 2nd service) that we need everyone to be at. Mark Vescio, our run promoter, will be there to discuss what needs to be done in the last 2 weeks leading up & where all we need people to help the day of. PLEASE BE THERE & encourage your friends to come as well.

I believe this will be an amazing event on many different levels & thank you again for your willingness to help us pull this off.

My Post-Easter Recap & Debrief

I’m STILL overwhelmed, amazed and thankful for all that took place in our Easter services… here are a few things I want to say to you all…

#1 – THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to all of you who accepted our “One Invite Changed My Life” Challenge & went out of your way to bring people to 1 of our Easter celebrations.  We saw God move in a HUGE way! We had our highest attendance ever with almost 800 people coming through our doors. We had 59 people commit their lives to Christmany people re-commit their lives, & many commit to get baptized at our BBQ & Baptisms on May 11.  GO GOD & Go Eagle Pointe! YOU ALL ROCK!!!

#2 – I want to encourage all of you who invited someone to Easter & they did not show… or maybe you brought someone who is far from God & they did not respond to the Gospel.  DO NOT GIVE UP ON THEM!  Remember, God was patient with you… and He wants us to be patient with others. As you’ve heard me say – God never gave up on me – so I CANNOT give up on others.  Just keep praying for them & inviting them!

#3 – I did this on twitter & facebook Sunday afternoon… but I wanted to say it here as well —  “THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU” to ALL of our volunteers who sacrificed their time, energy, & effort to make sure that so many people were welcomed, cared for & had a great experience when they arrived at Eagle Pointe on Easter Sunday. God has blessed us with the greatest volunteer army on the planet! You all are making a huge difference & I thank God for you all every day! Keep up the amazing work!

EPC - If Today Was Your Last Day - Graphic#4 –  The people you brought with you to Easter (RE-INVITE THEM) & the people who you invited but didn’t make it on Easter… Invite again & GET THEM HERE THIS SUNDAY!  We’re going to officially kick-off this “If Today Was Your Last Day” series & this Sunday we’re learning how to “Live In The Moment”! In fact, I challenge you to view every Sunday as a “One Invite Changed My Life” Challenge. This will be a powerful & life-changing series teaching us all how to live every day as though it were our last. CLICK HERE to watch the Promo Video & share with your friends.

#5 – THANK YOU to so many of you who helped blow-up Facebook by sharing invites & videos to “Easter at Eagle Pointe”! It worked!!! It’s all about “branding” & “name-recognition”. Most of these people are not ready to give Jesus & His church a try yet – but when they are we want them to think about us!

#6 – LET’S KEEP IT UP! I challenged all of our Eagle Pointe family to Pray & Fast, Expect, Invite-Invite-Invite, Fire Up Your Facebook, & Serve/Do Whatever It Takes leading up to Easter. However, these are things that we as Disciples should be doing every week – right? So, let’s keep doing these things! We have graphics, videos, etc on My Facebook page & our Eagle Pointe Facebook page for you to use to share/invite friends to our “If Today Was Your Last Day” series (which officially kicks off this Sunday).  Let’s do this & allow God to use us to help change lives, families & eternities!

Eagle Pointe’rs – Thanks for being who you are! A bunch of messed up, reckless, throwing caution to the wind, disciples & followers of Jesus! I love & appreciate you all!

Easter is Almost Here! Help us get ready!

EPC - Easter 2013 - Graphic - Website

I am SO looking forward to the Easter Celebration we have planned for this Sunday! As we are working our tails off getting ready for you & the people you bring with you on this BIG day – here are some specific things that YOU can do as we prepare to celebrate Easter at Eagle Pointe:

1. Invite your friends!

It’s always amazed me that although we know many of our friends are LOOKING for a church to attend on Easter, we still feel nervous when inviting them. Maybe it’s the fact that we all feel a bit nervous when talking about things that are important to us. The truth is, when you invite a friend to join you for church on Easter they very often will come, and even if they cannot, they’ll appreciate the fact that you thought of them.

We have invite cards available at church for you to hand out. Check out my Facebook page & our Eagle Pointe Facebook page for videos, invites, etc that you can share. THANK YOU to so many of you who are helping blow-up Facebook by sharing invites & videos to “Easter at Eagle Pointe”! IT’S WORKING!!!

We have our billboard up on US 41 & we’ll have Easter road signs everywhere in our community you can use as a discussion starter (“Hey, have you seen…). Also, I will be sending out an e-mail invitation that you can easily send to all of your friends. Our Eagle Pointe website also has information & the times of our Easter services.

Again, more people will attend church on Easter than any other day of the year. Studies show that 3 out of 4 people would attend an Easter church service if they were invited by someone they know. Let me encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and really make an effort to bring as many people as you possibly can this Easter. Don’t forget our “One Invite Changed My Life” Challenge (Take a moment to review).  Offer to pick them up and drive them here. (In fact, carpooling will help with parking!!!) Don’t just invite – BRING them with you!

2. Come to worship and serve this Sunday!

If your friends are meeting you here rather than riding with you, make plans to worship in either the 9:00am or 12:00pm hour & then serve in another hour. We will need lots of help in the children’s ministry and host team – if you are able to help out please contact Tim Roman for Host team – Lisa Skelly for Elementary ministry or Baby/Preschool ministry A.S.A.P.

3. Help us free up seats & parking spaces.

Parking WILL be an issue this Easter weekend! Please help us by carpooling if at all possible (your family doesn’t need to arrive in 2 or 3 cars separately).  Volunteers (especially those who will be here for 2 or 3 services) – please pack out our back gravel lots behind the church. People not being able to find a parking spot does not make for a very good 1st impression.

***AND – please attend our 9:00am or 12:00pm celebrations. Most visitors will come at 10:30am & we do not want them to have difficulty finding a seat or parking space.

4. Help out in any way that you can.

If you see ANYTHING that needs to be done – a piece of paper that needs to be picked up, a person who needs a question answered, a restroom that needs to be cleaned – I encourage you to “just do it.” One of the great things about Eagle Pointe is the way that we all pull together to meet whatever is needed.

Let’s make every effort to see that everyone has the best possible experience here at Eagle Pointe this Easter. Let’s see to it that not one person walks through our doors without being greeted by several people and introduced around. Let’s make everyone feel welcomed, loved, and appreciated. Hopefully, they will leave thinking, “That is the friendliest place I’ve ever been to. “Everyone is on the Host Team this Easter! (Actually, that is the case every Sunday!)

***Remember: Studies show that most visitors to a church will make up their mind within the first 8 minutes as to whether they are ever coming back again. Let’s do absolutely everything we can to get them to come back again.

5. Personally celebrate the Good News of Easter starting today.

Just think of it: because of Easter our past is forgiven, our life is worth living and we have a future in heaven! Romans 3:22 says, “We are made right in God’s sight when we trust in Jesus Christ to take away our sins. And we all can be saved in this same way, no matter who we are or what we have done.” Start praising God & celebrating today & every day!

PS. DON’T FORGET ABOUT OUR GOOD FRIDAY WORSHIP & COMMUNION SERVICE ON FRIDAY EVENING AT 7PM.

I look forward to seeing you this weekend!

One Invite Literally Changed My Life

EPC - One Invite - Changed My Life

That’s my story – how about you? One invite really did change my life! Well, it was actually one person inviting me a whole bunch of times to his church until I finally gave in! THANK GOD my buddy Garland Robertson cared enough about me that he didn’t give up on me. I knew Garland for many years, but we had lost touch for a period of our lives. Then one day we ran into each other at a University of Miami football game. We both had season tickets & his were a few rows behind me.

At every football game we would catch up, talk about life, and at some point in the discussion he would work into the conversation something cool that his church was doing & invite me to come check it out. I was always polite about it – but would always blow off his invites. If you look up the word “determination” – there will be a picture of Garland there. He never gave up on me! For 2 years, every time he saw me, he would invite me. He was never pushy or obnoxious about it – he was just determined! He cared enough about me, my life, my family & where I was going to spend eternity – that he wouldn’t give up.

Finally, one day when I was at a place in my life where I was ready – I said “yes”! My life has never been the same since! Thanks Gar & Thanks Jesus – for caring enough about me & not giving up on me.

Easter Sunday (this coming Sunday) is the greatest God-given opportunity of the year for you to reach out to & invite people to Eagle Pointe! Don’t waste this God-given opportunity!

Now, here are a few things I challenge you to join me in doing this week leading up to Easter:

1) PRAY & FAST! – Let’s unleash the power of prayer! Pray for your friends, our community, our church, our Easter services & for CHANGED LIVES!!!EXPECT – Expect God to show up & do the miraculous! (If you want to learn more about Fasting – check out “Fasting for Spiritual Breakthrough“.

2) EXPECT! Expect God to show up & do the miraculous. Let’s add a big-time dose of faith to our prayers & let’s do our part! Let’s give God some actions (on our part) that He can bless!

3) INVITE, INVITE, INVITE! Go stark raving crazy this week inviting everyone God brings across your path – friends, neighbors, co-workers… If you need more “Easter at Eagle Pointe” invite cards drop by the church & get them. The reality is that most people want to be, or feel like they should, be in church on Easter — so let’s help them out with that!

4) FIRE UP YOUR FACEBOOK! Get on my Facebook page or our Eagle Pointe Facebook page & start sharing the invites & videos we have to promote “Easter at Eagle Pointe”. Change your Facebook profile pic to our Easter profile pic. BTW: It’s working! Since we started our Facebook campaign 2 weeks ago – the number of people who are seeing something about Eagle Pointe & our Easter services have been mind-blowing. So, help us blow up Facebook this week by inviting all your Facebook friends.

5) BE HERE, SERVE & DO WHATEVER IT TAKES! Arrive early & help out in any way you can! We need a number of you to go to our 9:00AM & 12:00pm service to make room in our 10:30 service. Please help us pack out our 2 back gravel lots & car pool with family & friends. We need to free up some seating & parking this Easter! As with every weekend at Eagle Pointe – EVERYONE is on Host Team on Easter! You see something  that needs picked up –  a bathroom that needs restocked – just do it! You see people looking unsure of where they’re going – introduce yourself &  show them around. You see people sitting by themselves – go sit with them & make them feel comfortable.

Again, join us in doing WHATEVER IT TAKES to reach our community for Jesus this Easter!

PS. I wonder who will be doing 1 of our “One Invite Changed My Life” videos someday because you cared enough to invite them???

The “I Am That Hero 5K Run/Walk” itself will begin at 6PM on Saturday April 27th in the parking lot of Electric Cowboy in Kennesaw. Pre-race festivities will begin at 5PM. There will be food, music, bounce houses & more for the kids. A time of honoring our local heroes & giving out awards to those under 18 yrs of age, will take place outside of Electric Cowboy at approximately 7:30PM. A FREE After-Party will take place inside the club at 8:30PM. During the after-party we will again honor & recognize all of our local heroes, as well as, give out awards to those 18 & over. For more info & to register yourself/team visit www.IAmThatHero.org – you can also keep up with the latest event news via our I Am That Hero Facebook page. (Please help us promote this event)

Also – we need a lot of help as we get ready for this event. Please join us for a Planning/Volunteer meeting right after 2nd service this Sunday March 17 at Eagle Pointe church & see how you can help.

***Here is a EPC – Hero 5K – Sponsor Pack for potential Business sponsors who want to team up with us to say “thank you” to our Local Heroes.
