Thinking the Unthinkable
I’m sharing this on my blog today because I believe this is a long overdue discussion that our country needs to have. It’s time to push aside all of the philosophical & political rhetoric and find a way to help these families & children. Please take the time to read & absorb every word of this mother’s cry for help!
In the wake of another horrific national tragedy, it’s easy to talk about guns. But it’s time to talk about mental illness.
Three days before 20 year-old Adam Lanza killed his mother, then opened fire on a classroom full of Connecticut kindergartners, my 13-year old son Michael (name changed) missed his bus because he was wearing the wrong color pants.
“I can wear these pants,” he said, his tone increasingly belligerent, the black-hole pupils of his eyes swallowing the blue irises.
“They are navy blue,” I told him. “Your school’s dress code says black or khaki pants only.”
“They told me I could wear these,” he insisted. “You’re a stupid bitch. I can wear whatever pants I want to. This is America. I have rights!”
“You can’t wear whatever pants you want to,” I said, my tone affable, reasonable. “And you definitely cannot call me a stupid bitch. You’re grounded from electronics for the rest of the day. Now get in the car, and I will take you to school.”
I live with a son who is mentally ill. I love my son. But he terrifies me.
A few weeks ago, Michael pulled a knife and threatened to kill me and then himself after I asked him to return his overdue library books. His 7 and 9 year old siblings knew the safety plan—they ran to the car and locked the doors before I even asked them to. I managed to get the knife from Michael, then methodically collected all the sharp objects in the house into a single Tupperware container that now travels with me. Through it all, he continued to scream insults at me and threaten to kill or hurt me.
That conflict ended with three burly police officers and a paramedic wrestling my son onto a gurney for an expensive ambulance ride to the local emergency room. The mental hospital didn’t have any beds that day, and Michael calmed down nicely in the ER, so they sent us home with a prescription for Zyprexa and a follow-up visit with a local pediatric psychiatrist.
We still don’t know what’s wrong with Michael. Autism spectrum, ADHD, Oppositional Defiant or Intermittent Explosive Disorder have all been tossed around at various meetings with probation officers and social workers and counselors and teachers and school administrators. He’s been on a slew of antipsychotic and mood altering pharmaceuticals, a Russian novel of behavioral plans. Nothing seems to work.
At the start of seventh grade, Michael was accepted to an accelerated program for highly gifted math and science students. His IQ is off the charts. When he’s in a good mood, he will gladly bend your ear on subjects ranging from Greek mythology to the differences between Einsteinian and Newtonian physics to Doctor Who. He’s in a good mood most of the time. But when he’s not, watch out. And it’s impossible to predict what will set him off.
Several weeks into his new junior high school, Michael began exhibiting increasingly odd and threatening behaviors at school. We decided to transfer him to the district’s most restrictive behavioral program, a contained school environment where children who can’t function in normal classrooms can access their right to free public babysitting from 7:30-1:50 Monday through Friday until they turn 18.
The morning of the pants incident, Michael continued to argue with me on the drive. He would occasionally apologize and seem remorseful. Right before we turned into his school parking lot, he said, “Look, Mom, I’m really sorry. Can I have video games back today?”
“No way,” I told him. “You cannot act the way you acted this morning and think you can get your electronic privileges back that quickly.”
His face turned cold, and his eyes were full of calculated rage. “Then I’m going to kill myself,” he said. “I’m going to jump out of this car right now and kill myself.”
That was it. After the knife incident, I told him that if he ever said those words again, I would take him straight to the mental hospital, no ifs, ands, or buts. I did not respond, except to pull the car into the opposite lane, turning left instead of right.
“Where are you taking me?” he said, suddenly worried. “Where are we going?”
“You know where we are going,” I replied.
“No! You can’t do that to me! You’re sending me to hell! You’re sending me straight to hell!”
I pulled up in front of the hospital, frantically waiving for one of the clinicians who happened to be standing outside. “Call the police,” I said. “Hurry.”\
Michael was in a full-blown fit by then, screaming and hitting. I hugged him close so he couldn’t escape from the car. He bit me several times and repeatedly jabbed his elbows into my rib cage. I’m still stronger than he is, but I won’t be for much longer.
The police came quickly and carried my son screaming and kicking into the bowels of the hospital. I started to shake, and tears filled my eyes as I filled out the paperwork—“Were there any difficulties with….at what age did your child….were there any problems with…has your child ever experienced…does your child have….”
At least we have health insurance now. I recently accepted a position with a local college, giving up my freelance career because when you have a kid like this, you need benefits. You’ll do anything for benefits. No individual insurance plan will cover this kind of thing.
For days, my son insisted that I was lying—that I made the whole thing up so that I could get rid of him. The first day, when I called to check up on him, he said, “I hate you. And I’m going to get my revenge as soon as I get out of here.”
By day three, he was my calm, sweet boy again, all apologies and promises to get better. I’ve heard those promises for years. I don’t believe them anymore.
On the intake form, under the question, “What are your expectations for treatment?” I wrote, “I need help.”
And I do. This problem is too big for me to handle on my own. Sometimes there are no good options. So you just pray for grace and trust that in hindsight, it will all make sense.
I am sharing this story because I am Adam Lanza’s mother. I am Dylan Klebold’s and Eric Harris’s mother. I am James Holmes’s mother. I am Jared Loughner’s mother. I am Seung-Hui Cho’s mother. And these boys—and their mothers—need help. In the wake of another horrific national tragedy, it’s easy to talk about guns. But it’s time to talk about mental illness.
According to Mother Jones, since 1982, 61 mass murders involving firearms have occurred throughout the country. (http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2012/07/mass-shootings-map). Of these, 43 of the killers were white males, and only one was a woman. Mother Jones focused on whether the killers obtained their guns legally (most did). But this highly visible sign of mental illness should lead us to consider how many people in the U.S. live in fear, like I do.
When I asked my son’s social worker about my options, he said that the only thing I could do was to get Michael charged with a crime. “If he’s back in the system, they’ll create a paper trail,” he said. “That’s the only way you’re ever going to get anything done. No one will pay attention to you unless you’ve got charges.”
I don’t believe my son belongs in jail. The chaotic environment exacerbates Michael’s sensitivity to sensory stimuli and doesn’t deal with the underlying pathology. But it seems like the United States is using prison as the solution of choice for mentally ill people. According to Human Rights Watch, the number of mentally ill inmates in U.S. prisons quadrupled from 2000 to 2006, and it continues to rise—in fact, the rate of inmate mental illness is five times greater (56 percent) than in the non-incarcerated population. (http://www.hrw.org/news/2006/09/05/us-number-mentally-ill-prisons-quadrupled)
With state-run treatment centers and hospitals shuttered, prison is now the last resort for the mentally ill—Rikers Island, the LA County Jail, and Cook County Jail in Illinois housed the nation’s largest treatment centers in 2011 (http://www.npr.org/2011/09/04/140167676/nations-jails-struggle-with-mentally-ill-prisoners)
No one wants to send a 13-year old genius who loves Harry Potter and his snuggle animal collection to jail. But our society, with its stigma on mental illness and its broken healthcare system, does not provide us with other options. Then another tortured soul shoots up a fast food restaurant. A mall. A kindergarten classroom. And we wring our hands and say, “Something must be done.”
I agree that something must be done. It’s time for a meaningful, nation-wide conversation about mental health. That’s the only way our nation can ever truly heal.
God help me. God help Michael. God help us all.

21 things God has been teaching me & reminding me of…
God is always speaking to us & trying to teach us new things – here are just a few of the things He has been teaching me & reminding me of lately…
1) “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived all that God has in store for those who love Him…” (1 Cor. 2:9) “You have no idea how HUGE I am & how HUGE my plans are!” We need to dream bigger dreams!
2) If God says to go after Moby Dick in a row boat with a pair of finger nail clippers – BRING THE TARTAR SAUCE BABY!
3) Right now God is at work… doing things that I am COMPLETELY unaware of… but will reap the results of when He thinks I am ready.
4) Someone addicted to routine and ritual will never be a change agent in God’s church! Find one in the Bible – go ahead – try!
5) God doesn’t need me… I need Him! Desperately!
6) I am NOT the source of one single blessing in my life – GOD IS!!!
7) Balance is a myth! Look at Jesus or anyone God used in the Bible – their lives were completely out of balance in God’s direction.
8) When you play around with sin… there are always consequences! ALWAYS!
9) If I can accomplish “HIS vision” without HIS help ——- then it isn’t “HIS vision!”
10) Passive husbands and fathers suck! (Sorry! Just being honest about it!)
11) God leads me step by step – NOT in three to five year plans! Long range planning is for those who try to keep God in a box.
12) God is Sovereign and is not surprised by anything!
13) “DO NOT SETTLE!” EVER!
14) God often works through the “impossible” to accomplish the “unbelievable!”
15) The difficult we will do right now – the impossible may take a little while.
16) I need to live in faith… NOT in fear!
17) The key to continually taking my marriage to the next level is to stop seeking things from her – and to start going all out to serve her!
18) My responsibility as a leader is to set the next generation up for success.
19) So goes the leader–so goes the people.
20) I need to relax more & have fun more!!!
21) I can’t believe I get to do this (Lead Pastor of an awesome church) for a living!
Can’t wait to see what He says next!!!

I Am That Hero 5K – Only 19 Days Away!!!
We are now less than 3 WEEKS AWAY from the big event & there are many aspects of this that we need your help in getting done right away. Please make time to go through the items below & see what you can do…
1) Sponsors, Sponsors, Sponsors! We need local businesses to become sponsors of our event. Here is a “EPC – Hero 5K – Sponsor Pack” to share with potential sponsors & a EPC – Tax ID – letter letter to show that all sponsorships & donations are tax-deductible. (Please talk with your own company & start hitting up other area businesses) ***ALSO – We need restaurants to be food sponsors (They set up a table & give away samples of their food & promote themselves. For doing this they get all the benefits of a $350 sponsorship)
2) We need people the next 2 weekend to go to different 5K’s in our area & pass out postcards about our 5K to runners as they finish. (Preferably our people would be in superhero costumes while doing this) ***NOTE: If you can help with this contact Jason Adams right away – (678) 231-2091 or jasonadams9@hotmail.com (4/13 CASA Superhero Run Woodstock, 4/13 Boulderdash 5k Cumming, 4/20 Runningnerds 5K Atlanta, 4/20 Sweetwater 5K Atlanta, 4/20 Run the River Roswell)
3) Marketing & Promotion. Help us blow up social media about this, tell all your friends, co-workers, etc. Check out & “Like” our I Am That Hero 5K Facebook page & start sharing about this with your friends. Also – we need people to contact local community news outlets to let our community know & local news (papers, TV, radio) to cover the event.
4) We need gift cards from restaurants, stores, movie theaters, etc to give away as “Thank You’s” to local heroes who attend our race. (So we will need A LOT of these!!!)
5) We need items to give away to participants & to put in their goody bags. These could be running related, superhero related, or it could have no tie in whatsoever. (The more free stuff the better!) Get creative with ideas!
6) We need people to visit local police stations, fire stations, hospitals, medical centers, military stations, etc – to ask them to come/bring a team, be a part of our event & allow our community to honor them. (We have posters, flyers & postcards at the church office)
7) We need people to go to local stores, restaurants, etc to ask them to put up a poster promoting our race.
(We have Sponsor Info Packs, Posters, Registration forms, & postcards available at the church office)
We want this to be a huge, over-the-top event that people will be talking about & looking forward to the next one. Again, get creative & help us to that end.
***NOTE: We will have an All Volunteers Meeting this coming Sunday 4/14 (right after 2nd service) that we need everyone to be at. Mark Vescio, our run promoter, will be there to discuss what needs to be done in the last 2 weeks leading up & where all we need people to help the day of. PLEASE BE THERE & encourage your friends to come as well.
I believe this will be an amazing event on many different levels & thank you again for your willingness to help us pull this off.

My Post-Easter Recap & Debrief
I’m STILL overwhelmed, amazed and thankful for all that took place in our Easter services… here are a few things I want to say to you all…
#1 – THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to all of you who accepted our “One Invite Changed My Life” Challenge & went out of your way to bring people to 1 of our Easter celebrations. We saw God move in a HUGE way! We had our highest attendance ever with almost 800 people coming through our doors. We had 59 people commit their lives to Christ, many people re-commit their lives, & many commit to get baptized at our BBQ & Baptisms on May 11. GO GOD & Go Eagle Pointe! YOU ALL ROCK!!!
#2 – I want to encourage all of you who invited someone to Easter & they did not show… or maybe you brought someone who is far from God & they did not respond to the Gospel. DO NOT GIVE UP ON THEM! Remember, God was patient with you… and He wants us to be patient with others. As you’ve heard me say – God never gave up on me – so I CANNOT give up on others. Just keep praying for them & inviting them!
#3 – I did this on twitter & facebook Sunday afternoon… but I wanted to say it here as well — “THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU” to ALL of our volunteers who sacrificed their time, energy, & effort to make sure that so many people were welcomed, cared for & had a great experience when they arrived at Eagle Pointe on Easter Sunday. God has blessed us with the greatest volunteer army on the planet! You all are making a huge difference & I thank God for you all every day! Keep up the amazing work!
#4 – The people you brought with you to Easter (RE-INVITE THEM) & the people who you invited but didn’t make it on Easter… Invite again & GET THEM HERE THIS SUNDAY! We’re going to officially kick-off this “If Today Was Your Last Day” series & this Sunday we’re learning how to “Live In The Moment”! In fact, I challenge you to view every Sunday as a “One Invite Changed My Life” Challenge. This will be a powerful & life-changing series teaching us all how to live every day as though it were our last. CLICK HERE to watch the Promo Video & share with your friends.
#5 – THANK YOU to so many of you who helped blow-up Facebook by sharing invites & videos to “Easter at Eagle Pointe”! It worked!!! It’s all about “branding” & “name-recognition”. Most of these people are not ready to give Jesus & His church a try yet – but when they are we want them to think about us!
#6 – LET’S KEEP IT UP! I challenged all of our Eagle Pointe family to Pray & Fast, Expect, Invite-Invite-Invite, Fire Up Your Facebook, & Serve/Do Whatever It Takes leading up to Easter. However, these are things that we as Disciples should be doing every week – right? So, let’s keep doing these things! We have graphics, videos, etc on My Facebook page & our Eagle Pointe Facebook page for you to use to share/invite friends to our “If Today Was Your Last Day” series (which officially kicks off this Sunday). Let’s do this & allow God to use us to help change lives, families & eternities!
Eagle Pointe’rs – Thanks for being who you are! A bunch of messed up, reckless, throwing caution to the wind, disciples & followers of Jesus! I love & appreciate you all!

Easter is Almost Here! Help us get ready!
I am SO looking forward to the Easter Celebration we have planned for this Sunday! As we are working our tails off getting ready for you & the people you bring with you on this BIG day – here are some specific things that YOU can do as we prepare to celebrate Easter at Eagle Pointe:
1. Invite your friends!
It’s always amazed me that although we know many of our friends are LOOKING for a church to attend on Easter, we still feel nervous when inviting them. Maybe it’s the fact that we all feel a bit nervous when talking about things that are important to us. The truth is, when you invite a friend to join you for church on Easter they very often will come, and even if they cannot, they’ll appreciate the fact that you thought of them.
We have invite cards available at church for you to hand out. Check out my Facebook page & our Eagle Pointe Facebook page for videos, invites, etc that you can share. THANK YOU to so many of you who are helping blow-up Facebook by sharing invites & videos to “Easter at Eagle Pointe”! IT’S WORKING!!!
We have our billboard up on US 41 & we’ll have Easter road signs everywhere in our community you can use as a discussion starter (“Hey, have you seen…). Also, I will be sending out an e-mail invitation that you can easily send to all of your friends. Our Eagle Pointe website also has information & the times of our Easter services.
Again, more people will attend church on Easter than any other day of the year. Studies show that 3 out of 4 people would attend an Easter church service if they were invited by someone they know. Let me encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and really make an effort to bring as many people as you possibly can this Easter. Don’t forget our “One Invite Changed My Life” Challenge (Take a moment to review). Offer to pick them up and drive them here. (In fact, carpooling will help with parking!!!) Don’t just invite – BRING them with you!
2. Come to worship and serve this Sunday!
If your friends are meeting you here rather than riding with you, make plans to worship in either the 9:00am or 12:00pm hour & then serve in another hour. We will need lots of help in the children’s ministry and host team – if you are able to help out please contact Tim Roman for Host team – Lisa Skelly for Elementary ministry or Baby/Preschool ministry A.S.A.P.
3. Help us free up seats & parking spaces.
Parking WILL be an issue this Easter weekend! Please help us by carpooling if at all possible (your family doesn’t need to arrive in 2 or 3 cars separately). Volunteers (especially those who will be here for 2 or 3 services) – please pack out our back gravel lots behind the church. People not being able to find a parking spot does not make for a very good 1st impression.
***AND – please attend our 9:00am or 12:00pm celebrations. Most visitors will come at 10:30am & we do not want them to have difficulty finding a seat or parking space.
4. Help out in any way that you can.
If you see ANYTHING that needs to be done – a piece of paper that needs to be picked up, a person who needs a question answered, a restroom that needs to be cleaned – I encourage you to “just do it.” One of the great things about Eagle Pointe is the way that we all pull together to meet whatever is needed.
Let’s make every effort to see that everyone has the best possible experience here at Eagle Pointe this Easter. Let’s see to it that not one person walks through our doors without being greeted by several people and introduced around. Let’s make everyone feel welcomed, loved, and appreciated. Hopefully, they will leave thinking, “That is the friendliest place I’ve ever been to. “Everyone is on the Host Team this Easter! (Actually, that is the case every Sunday!)
***Remember: Studies show that most visitors to a church will make up their mind within the first 8 minutes as to whether they are ever coming back again. Let’s do absolutely everything we can to get them to come back again.
5. Personally celebrate the Good News of Easter starting today.
Just think of it: because of Easter our past is forgiven, our life is worth living and we have a future in heaven! Romans 3:22 says, “We are made right in God’s sight when we trust in Jesus Christ to take away our sins. And we all can be saved in this same way, no matter who we are or what we have done.” Start praising God & celebrating today & every day!
PS. DON’T FORGET ABOUT OUR GOOD FRIDAY WORSHIP & COMMUNION SERVICE ON FRIDAY EVENING AT 7PM.
I look forward to seeing you this weekend!

One Invite Literally Changed My Life
That’s my story – how about you? One invite really did change my life! Well, it was actually one person inviting me a whole bunch of times to his church until I finally gave in! THANK GOD my buddy Garland Robertson cared enough about me that he didn’t give up on me. I knew Garland for many years, but we had lost touch for a period of our lives. Then one day we ran into each other at a University of Miami football game. We both had season tickets & his were a few rows behind me.
At every football game we would catch up, talk about life, and at some point in the discussion he would work into the conversation something cool that his church was doing & invite me to come check it out. I was always polite about it – but would always blow off his invites. If you look up the word “determination” – there will be a picture of Garland there. He never gave up on me! For 2 years, every time he saw me, he would invite me. He was never pushy or obnoxious about it – he was just determined! He cared enough about me, my life, my family & where I was going to spend eternity – that he wouldn’t give up.
Finally, one day when I was at a place in my life where I was ready – I said “yes”! My life has never been the same since! Thanks Gar & Thanks Jesus – for caring enough about me & not giving up on me.
Easter Sunday (this coming Sunday) is the greatest God-given opportunity of the year for you to reach out to & invite people to Eagle Pointe! Don’t waste this God-given opportunity!
Now, here are a few things I challenge you to join me in doing this week leading up to Easter:
1) PRAY & FAST! – Let’s unleash the power of prayer! Pray for your friends, our community, our church, our Easter services & for CHANGED LIVES!!!EXPECT – Expect God to show up & do the miraculous! (If you want to learn more about Fasting – check out “Fasting for Spiritual Breakthrough“.
2) EXPECT! Expect God to show up & do the miraculous. Let’s add a big-time dose of faith to our prayers & let’s do our part! Let’s give God some actions (on our part) that He can bless!
3) INVITE, INVITE, INVITE! Go stark raving crazy this week inviting everyone God brings across your path – friends, neighbors, co-workers… If you need more “Easter at Eagle Pointe” invite cards drop by the church & get them. The reality is that most people want to be, or feel like they should, be in church on Easter — so let’s help them out with that!
4) FIRE UP YOUR FACEBOOK! Get on my Facebook page or our Eagle Pointe Facebook page & start sharing the invites & videos we have to promote “Easter at Eagle Pointe”. Change your Facebook profile pic to our Easter profile pic. BTW: It’s working! Since we started our Facebook campaign 2 weeks ago – the number of people who are seeing something about Eagle Pointe & our Easter services have been mind-blowing. So, help us blow up Facebook this week by inviting all your Facebook friends.
5) BE HERE, SERVE & DO WHATEVER IT TAKES! Arrive early & help out in any way you can! We need a number of you to go to our 9:00AM & 12:00pm service to make room in our 10:30 service. 40,000 Minutes of Prayer
God has really been working on me lately about the power of prayer. Prayer is very literally the key that unlocks the door to all that God wants to do in our lives, families, and in our churches. The problem for too many people is that they view prayer as a last resort – when in reality, it should be the very first step we take before attempting to do anything. We have recently seen prayers being answered in the form of marriages being restored, addictions being overcome, people being reached for Christ, people re-engaging in a relationship with Christ after years of being away from, and physical bodies being healed. GO GOD! We have seen God answering our fasting and prayers and our church is growing & reaching people who have not been in church in years, if ever. GO GOD!
However, I still have this unsettled feeling, this ” holy discontent” that there’s so much more that God wants to do here. I have pastor & missionary friends all over the globe & I hear about how God is moving in other parts of the world – thousands upon thousands of people becoming followers of Jesus each day in Southeast Asia, Africa, the South Pacific, Central and South America. There are God-sized New Testament type movements taking place all over the globe. Then I look at what is going on here in America and I wonder – why isn’t God moving like that here. You know He wants to –– but why isn’t He?
David Cho, pastor of the largest church in the world in Seoul South Korea, once said, “Americans are not willing to pay the price of prayer!” He went on to describe how Americans will pray for something for a few days, maybe even a few weeks, but if God does not answer right away they give up praying about it. David Cho started his church 30 years ago with a handful of leaders who would get up every morning at 4:00AM and spend the first 2 hours of their day praying for God to “give them everyplace they went in the land” (Joshua 1:3). They weren’t just praying for a town or a city – they were praying for God to use them to reach the entire country of South Korea. Heck – with over 1 million people actively involved in their church today – they are well on their way.
It really bothers me that there’s nowhere in the United States where God is moving like that – NOWHERE! Well, I’m beginning to pray for God to “give us everyplace we go in the land“.

I don’t want to just be a part of a church – I want to be a part of a mind blowing movement of God that generations from now will still be talking about. But again, the key that unlocks the door to that is prayer! And I’m asking you to join me in praying some big, audacious, God-sized prayers.
To help get this ball rolling in God’s direction if you will – I am challenging you to join me for something I am calling “40,000 minutes of prayer”. You might be wondering – “What the heck is that?” Well, I want to see our entire church praying for God to move in some huge, huge ways this Easter Sunday 2013.
40,000 minutes of prayer = about 500 people (a conservative estimate of the number of people coming to Eagle Pointe church) committing to spend 3 minutes a day praying for the next 4 weeks leading up to Easter Sunday. 3 minutes each day praying for God to “give us the land” – to help us reach an incredible number of people in our community for Him on Easter Sunday. I hope and pray that you will join us in this effort and encourage others to join us as well. May God bless you all!

A Mind-blowing Week in Haiti
I am still processing all that we did & experienced this past week in Haiti. Serving 2000 people medically in our clinic, in tent cities & in orphanages. Building homes for families who live under a piece of tarp or in a tent.
The abject poverty & unsanitary conditions that millions in Haiti live in daily. The diseases & illnesses that are killing so many there is just unimaginable & overwhelming.
But the images that haunt me are the faces of the 100′s of children we work with in the orphanages there. It’s hard enough for anyone to survive in these conditions even when they have a family to lean on & help them. But these littlest ones have no one!
I am so grateful for the opportunity that God gives us, & that your donations give us, to serve “the least of these” as Jesus commanded us to. I am so grateful to see so many people who we helped/served on previous trips – who are now a part of our local church in Carrefour. I am so grateful that I & our church gets to play a part in the amazing work God is doing in Haiti.
THANK YOU to those who generously support our work in Haiti. Your donations are literally saving lives, as well as, opening the door for our local church there in Carrefour to be able to minister to & meet the spiritual needs of their local community. Many people where we work in Haiti continually thank us for “not forgetting them” – they say we are the only group who continues to come back again & again & help their community. So I convey that same “thank you” to you on behalf of them.
Our next trip will be June 8 – 15 & we are going to need your support again. We will need to raise about $4500 to buy medical supplies & we will need $4000 to build homes in Haiti. Quick story: I have a 7 yr old little buddy in Carrefour named Oscar (see pic to the left). Oscar hunts me down every time I’m there & he follows me around. Our teams say that he has “Howard radar”. No matter where I am or where we are working – Oscar WILL find me. One day last week Oscar took I & our team by his “home” to meet his mom & new little sister. This family of 5 lives in a little 8ft x 8ft shed. Mom gave me a big hug – Oscars face is beaming – & as mom is talking with my translator, the translator looks at me with this concerned/perplexed look on his face. Evidently, my little buddy Oscar had been telling his mom & siblings that “his friend Howard was going to build their family a home & paint it blue“. (This was news to me!) However, I would really love to make this amazing young boy’s dream come true!
***Please pray about how you might be able to help with our June medical/construction mission trip.
BTW: This Sunday at Eagle Pointe we will show a video/slideshow of this most recent mission trip. I hope to see you there!
You can also see lots of pictures from our trip & work there on my facebook page & our Serve The World facebook page.

We will have a team heading back to Port-au-Prince/Carrefour, Haiti February 16-23. We will run a free clinic for the week seeing 400+ families a day. - Candy to giveaway to children (lg bags of smaller pieces)
- Reading glasses (varying strengths)
- Used IPhones & Blackberries (Our ministry friends in Haiti can get service pretty cheap – but phones are very expensive. This is also much cheaper than computers/laptops so they can have email access, etc)

- Anti-fungal medicine (Lotrimin or other otc athletes foot meds)
- Permethrin 5%
- Neosporin/polysporin

Tornado Relief – Let’s Do This!
The news, images, & videos coming in from yesterday’s storms & tornado’s which ravaged parts of Calhoun & Adairsville, Georgia are heartbreaking. So many families have lost everything!
In typical Eagle Pointe fashion – it is time to mobilize & help out our neighbors. Starting this Saturday morning we will send chainsaw/clean-up teams to help with tornado relief. If you are interested in joining this Saturday or on following trips, please email John Wilcox or Myself.
Starting today we are collecting bottled water, canned goods, non-perishable food/snack items, diapers, formula, toiletries, etc.
If we get supplies fast enough, we will send a team on Sunday afternoon to deliver supplies. We will continue these efforts for some time to come.
Please help us by donating goods a.s.a.p. Spread the word to friends & co-workers to donate. Monetary donations can also be made online HERE (please select “local missions”)
Supplies can be dropped off at Eagle Pointe starting NOW & at any time between 7:00AM & 6:00PM Mon – Fri. We will also have a trailer to receive & load supplies this Sunday before & after our 9:30 & 11:00AM services. So, please bring LOTS of supplies with you this Sunday AM.
LET’S DO THIS! Let’s demonstrate the love of Jesus in a real, practical, & tangible way to our neighbors who are suffering right now.

Every Sunday Is Super Bowl Sunday
This is a re-post from last year. I shared this idea a bit at our Wild, Wild West Momentum leadership event & I told those folks that I would re-post this – so here it is…
I recently found myself thinking about the importance of Sunday or Weekend Worship Services. It dawned on me that professional football teams (BTW: I’m a big college football fan – GO CANES!) spend countless hours of preperation, practice, & game days trying to make it to the Super Bowl. And for those 2 teams who after a long, grueling season have made it to the big game – it’s all or nothing! 60 minutes to leave everything they’ve got on the field – because only 1 team is going home with the trophy. No matter what their regular season record was or how many records they broke during the regular season – none of that matters! All that matters are those 60 minutes on the field!
Hmmm – sounds a lot like the reality of Sunday or Weekend Worship Services (we’ll just call it “Sunday” for the sake of this blog). Sadly too many Churches & Christians just don’t grasp the importance of Sunday! Every Sunday is Super Bowl Sunday! In a church like ours where 60+% of the people had never been to church or hadn’t been since they were teens before coming here – in a community where 90% of the people do not attend church regularly – Every Sunday is Super Bowl Sunday! We’ve got 60 minutes to leave it all on the field!
With churches it isn’t a stinkin’ trophy that’s up for grabs – it’s people’s eternities! The reality in a church like ours is that most “guests/visitors” are “giving church a try” for the first time ever or in years. There is a very good chance that if they don’t connect, see the relevance, experience something that impacts them – they are going to leave & say – “Well, I tried church once & it didn’t work for me” & hang their hat on that for the rest of their lives. We can’t let that happen!
We as Christians/Churches have to give it all we’ve got – do whatever it takes – leave it all on the field – as @stevenfurtick says ‘burn it to the ground’ – every stinkin’ Sunday! We have to nail it every Sunday. How well our services go (music, video, drama, message) – how well we greet people & make them feel welcomed, accepted, & appreciated – how well we love on their kids & teens in those 60 minutes may be the deciding factor as to where that person spends eternity. We’ve got to leave it all on the field!
Here’s another thought… There ain’t no football players who have made it to the big dance who are calling in sick, going on vacations, or sleeping in late & missing Super Bowl Sunday! I think when we as Christians/Churches finally grasp just how important Sunday is – we’ll finally see our commitment, dedication, preparation, & performance – where God wants & deserves it to be.

2013 – A Year “Outside the Box”
Last night we had another amazing Momentum event with about 150 of the wildest, craziest, rowdiest leaders/volunteers on the planet. This Momentum had a wild, wild west theme & our leaders/volunteers, as usual, had too much fun getting dressed up & dancing down the runway for our best outfit contest.
In addition to just a fun, crazy party thanking all of those who work hard to carry out the ministry here at Eagle Pointe – I also shared some very “outside the box” ideas for our church in 2013.
Whether you are a part of our Eagle Pointe family or not – I strongly encourage you to make time to listen to the audio below. I would also love to hear your thoughts on this…
Here’s the link to listen to what I shared - Momentum Message – 01/27/13

T-Minus ONE Day – LET’S DO THIS!!!
We are now ONE DAY away from our BIG Benefit Concert to Build an Orphanage in Haiti. I CANNOT STINKIN’ WAIT!!!
Take a minute & check out another post about this event – “We’re Just Ticking Off Everybody!“
Cowboy Troy, Courtney Dickenson, the Dallas Martin Band, our own Eagle Pointe band, the ATL Falcons Cheerleaders, former professional wrestlers Rick Steiner & Lex Luger, & other special guests. We’ll also have food, drink, auction & raffle items, & much more for only $30 a ticket ($20 for college students). All of this while helping a GREAT cause!

We can give you flyers to hand out at colleges, businesses, shopping centers…
Get creative, help us pack out the concert, & let’s get this orphanage built! I hope to see you there!
PS. Eagle Pointe’rs – There are A LOT of your friends who might not be ready to come to church yet – but I bet they would come to this. Why don’t you get busy inviting them???

We’re Just Ticking Off Everybody!
We have been catching A LOT of Flak from people for our Benefit Concert to Build an Orphanage in Haiti. Surprised? I’m not. I knew this would be the case when we began kicking this idea around last summer.
I have been catching flak about how we do ministry for years now. When you go outside the traditional church box – religious people tend to lose their minds. Churches get upset that we reach drug addicts, alcoholics, divorcees, people with baggage from their past, etc. We call it “Church for people who don’t ‘do’ church!” We accept & embrace everyone regardless of their past or condition of their lives today. In addition to accepting them when they come to us, we also go to where they are – & a lot of religious people can’t handle that.
So, we have churches bashing us for teaming up with Electric Cowboy, a country night club, to do our benefit concert. I had a pastor this past week tell me that I was “leading people astray” & that I was leading people into “a den of sinners ”. REALLY? #1 - The people who run Electric Cowboy are some genuinely good & decent people. #2 - A lot of the people who go there are good people. #3 - I like country music & country dancing – deal with it!
So, I told this pastor & other “christians” & churches who have complained what I just stated above & that I have a feeling that if Jesus were still here in person that He would be a the club with us – going to where people are – not waiting until they come to us.
I’ve also had a few people from our community complain about the concert as well. I had someone recognize me at a local store & ask why would we want to build an orphanage for “those people” instead of helping “our own”? I don’t know if he meant it as a black/white thing or as a American/Non-American thing – but it took everything I had not to knock this guy out!
I told him – if you had any idea of the number of kids, people & families we help in our local community – you might not ask me that question. If you could ever see firsthand the conditions that millions of Haitian people live in, or all of the orphan street kids scrounging through trash piles trying to find food – you definitely would not ask me that question. Until you have any idea of what the heck you’re talking about, you might want to keep your mouth shut. I then handed him an invite card to our church & walked away. BTW: Since when does helping people have to be an either/or proposition?
While I/we are catching a lot of flak – we are also blowing a lot of people’s minds. A LOT of people have told us how cool it is that a church is working with a nightclub to help orphan children in Haiti. Most of these people probably would not come to church yet – but they are pretty excited about coming to our event.
I think that’s what Jesus & the apostle Paul modeled for us: Go to where people are, find common ground with them, & then reach out to them with the hope of Jesus.
BTW: We could use your help to pack out Electric Cowboy to buy land & get this orphanage built. Tell everyone you know & you can get tickets at the door or online @ http://serve-the-world.org

Top 10 Posts from 2012
As we wrap-up 2012 & get ready to kick-off 2013 – I want to thank so many of you who are subscribed to my blog, and who for some reason enjoy reading the random thoughts of my very unconventional mind.
After getting numerous requests I decided to post my Top 10 most read & most shared posts from 2012. So, here they are:
#10 – How to Talk with Kids & Teens About Sex – A rather popular post with the parenting set who are trying to guide their kids through our sex-saturated society.
#9 – Rev Up Your Church Announcements – Church announcements don’t have to be boring & monotonous.
#8 – How Comfortable Do Visitors Feel in Your Church? – A great reminder for all churches who give a flip about reaching people for Jesus.
#7 – Jesus, Social Media & His Revolution – This was a 3 part series about how churches & Christians can & should use Social Media to help fulfill the Great Commission.
#6 – Why Do Churches Do This? – The attention this one got surprised me. It was just a rant I went on about churches trying to swap sheep rather than actually reaching anybody for Jesus.
#5 – Yes – We’re All About the Numbers! – Thank you Steven Furtick for helping with this one.
#4 – Dads You Need to Date Your Daughters – This one really hit home with A BUNCH of dads & moms alike.
#3 – Get Over Yourself Please! – As much as I blasted typical American church/Christianity in this one – it was the most shared post of 2012. I’m sure the very funny video with it helped.
#2 – Christians, Dumbasses & Politics – After a wild & crazy election season I was pretty ticked at all the social media posts from “christians” before & after the election.
#1 was actually a tie between 2 posts…
#1B – Pastors/Leaders – Keep It In Your Pants! – This one should be self explanatory – but a great gut-check for anyone serving/leading in ministry.
#1A – Every Sunday is Super Bowl Sunday! – Every church leader needs to grab a hold of the fact that if your church is doing what Jesus commanded – then every single Sunday eternities literally hang in the balance.
2012 has been a great year & I can’t wait to see what 2013 has in store!

Christmas Gifts – On a Mission From God
I want to challenge all of us to completely rethink our Christmas gift giving this year!
Rather than buying into the consumerism, materialism, & greed that is so often a part of the American Christmas experience. Rather than buying a bunch of stuff that people really do not need & that will be collecting dust in a few short weeks. Let me challenge you to make your Christmas gift giving be “on a mission from God” this year!
Here are a few ideas of how you can get people a great Christmas gift – while supporting a great cause – & helping those who are A LOT less fortunate than any of us are.
1) Tickets to a Benefit Concert to Build an Orphanage in Haiti.
On Jan 21st we are doing “Monday Night Madness” with “COWBOY TROY & Friends“. There will be several bands opening, many surprise-special guest appearances, food, drinks, silent auctions, raffles, & much more. This is an opportunity for you to give the gift of tickets to a GREAT event while helping us buy land & build an orphanage in Haiti. CLICK HERE to purchased tickets. Please help us spread the word about this – we need to sell 3400 tickets!
2) Serve the World Christmas Gift Certificates.
These can be given as gifts & let people know that rather than get them a gift they probably don’t need – that a certain amount had been given in their name – to help provide for Children’s homes, Homeless shelters & struggling families locally, as well as, provide food, schooling, immunizations, medical care & the love of Jesus Christ in parts of the world where the average family lives on less than $2 a day. As well this donation helps fund local mission work, community service days (Faith in Actions), & benevolence assisting struggling families with financial needs & counseling. These Gift Certificates are available through our church office or in our Cafe on Sunday mornings.
3) Bags of Coffee from Haiti & Rwanda
We serve Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee each Sunday at Eagle Pointe & we make bags of this coffee available for purchase. Bags of this coffee make for great Christmas Gifts while at the same time help provide a job & a living wage for farmers in 2 of the poorest countries in the world. Bags of different blends of coffee & espresso are available through our church office or in our Cafe on Sunday mornings.
Again, let me challenge you to make your Christmas gift giving be “on a mission from God” this year! I’d love to hear your stories of the impression this made on those you give gifts to this Christmas.
Oh, and here’s one last thought on this idea…

“The Christmas Blues” – IT’S ON!!!
On Sunday Dec. 2nd we will kick off one of the most fun, rockin’, & most powerful series we’ve done here at Eagle Pointe. (And that’s saying something!)
The reality is that for most of us, Christmas has lost that sense of wonder, joy & excitement it once had. Too many of us just try to simply survive the season with our sanity intact. We invite you to join the Blues Brothers & your friends at Eagle Pointe as we rediscover the true meaning of this “most wonderful time of year”, & we embark “on a mission from God”!
The music, dramas, & messages we have planned, for each Sunday in December & on Christmas Eve, are going to flat-out blow you away! So, do not miss ANY of this series & please help us use this series to reach a whole bunch of people in our community for Jesus this Christmas season…
We will have invite cards available at church for you to hand out. Check out my Facebook page & our Eagle Pointe Facebook page for videos, invites, etc that you can share. Help us blow-up Facebook all month long by sharing invites & videos to our “Christmas Blues” series! Do your best to bring people with you each week of this series & on Christmas Eve.
BTW: Our Christmas Eve services will be held at Durham Middle School auditorium this year. We will have services on Sun. Dec. 23rd in our building at 9:30 & 11:00AM & then we will have Christmas Eve services on Dec. 24th at 4:15 & 6:00PM at Durham M.S. Help us make the most of this month-long, God-sized opportunity!
Be sure to take 2 min’s & watch the promo video for this series below…

How Comfortable Do Visitors Feel In Your Church?
How comfortable do guests/visitors feel in your church?
I know, I know, that was a beer commercial but I think it illustrates a great point for churches to consider – how comfortable do new people, different people, people who are not exactly like us, FEEL when they come into our church???
Many of you know that I walked away from church for a 6 year period of my life. I was a bodyguard & head of security for some of the biggest rock n’ roll bands in the world. I rode motorcycles, had long hair & tattoos, & I remember vividly the looks I would get from those who I looked different from. I remember when I “gave church a try” with Gina, who would later become my wife, and the uneasiness I felt. Would this be like the uptight, holier than thou, legalistic church I had grown up in? Would these people accept me or would I be an outcast?
Most of the people coming through our doors have never been to church, or haven’t been in many years because of a bad experience or they never saw the relevance of church. And as they pull onto our parking lot they are experiencing a great deal of uneasiness. They are wondering – Am I dressed right? What will they people be like? Will I be accepted or looked down on? What is the music like? What is the pastor like? Will they ask me to drink the Kool-Aid? Many times I liken it to going to a party where you don’t know anyone. As uneasy as that is for all of us, it’s about 20 times worse for people walking into a church where they don’t know anyone.
Listen – it is our responsibility to put them at ease immediately. I tell people that our “Host Team” (greeters, parking, ushers, coffee servers, children’s check-in, etc) may be the most important ministry in our entire church. Studies tell us that the average visitor to a church will make up their mind within in the 1st 8 minutes as to whether they are ever coming back to that church again. Did you catch that??? EIGHT STINKIN’ MINUTES!!! 8 minutes is about the time it takes for them to park, walk in the building, check-in their kids, grab a cup of coffee, & MAYBE have heard the 1st song! Think about that!
We are in a community where 90% of the people within a 5 mile radius of our church do not go to church regularly. We work our tails off to try to reach out to them & to get them to “give church a try”, & when they come they are feeling that uneasiness & they are looking for an excuse to say “AH HA! THAT’S why I don’t go to church!“
So, in addition to having a kick butt Host Team, I tell everyone who comes to Eagle Pointe that WE ARE ALL, every single one of us, is on Host Team EVERY weekend! It is up to us to make sure that everyone, no matter who they are or what they look like, feels loved, welcomed, accepted, & appreciated from the moment they pull onto our parking lot until they the moment they leave.
Because if we blow that first 8 minutes, if we don’t make a great first impression, then we will have just wasted that God-given opportunity to impact that person & their family for Jesus Christ! And that is completely unacceptable to me!
Remember: Jesus came to invite the outsider – not coddle the insider!
So, how comfortable do people feel in your church?
