Top 10 Posts from 2012

top-10As we wrap-up 2012 & get ready to kick-off 2013 – I want to thank so many of you who are subscribed to my blog, and who for some reason enjoy reading the random thoughts of my very unconventional mind.

After getting numerous requests I decided to post my Top 10 most read & most shared posts from 2012. So, here they are:

#10How to Talk with Kids & Teens About Sex – A rather popular post with the parenting set who are trying to guide their kids through our sex-saturated society.

#9Rev Up Your Church Announcements – Church announcements don’t have to be boring & monotonous.

#8How Comfortable Do Visitors Feel in Your Church? – A great reminder for all churches who give a flip about reaching people for Jesus.

#7Jesus, Social Media & His Revolution – This was a 3 part series about how churches & Christians can & should use Social Media to help fulfill the Great Commission.

#6Why Do Churches Do This? – The attention this one got surprised me. It was just a rant I went on about churches trying to swap sheep rather than actually reaching anybody for Jesus.

#5Yes – We’re All About the Numbers! – Thank you Steven Furtick for helping with this one.

#4Dads You Need to Date Your Daughters – This one really hit home with A BUNCH of dads & moms alike.

#3Get Over Yourself Please! – As much as I blasted typical American church/Christianity in this one – it was the most shared post of 2012. I’m sure the very funny video with it helped.

#2Christians, Dumbasses & Politics – After a wild & crazy election season I was pretty ticked at all the social media posts from “christians” before & after the election.

#1 was actually a tie between 2 posts…

#1BPastors/Leaders – Keep It In Your Pants! – This one should be self explanatory – but a great gut-check for anyone serving/leading in ministry.

#1AEvery Sunday is Super Bowl Sunday! – Every church leader needs to grab a hold of the fact that if your church is doing what Jesus commanded – then every single Sunday eternities literally hang in the balance.

2012 has been a great year & I can’t wait to see what 2013 has in store!

Why Christmas Is So Screwed Up – Part 4

Happy Thanksgiving! I know most of us are very busy with family & cooking – but I thought it was worth a try to get this post out right before “Black Friday”. I pray you will help spread the word about what I’ve been sharing this week in this 4 part series.

If you missed “Serve the World: Christmas Offering – Part 1,  Part 2,  & Part 3” please go back read them to better understand this post in context.

I propose that we “DO” Christmas different this year. Rather than buying into the frantic, crazy, stressful, non-stop month of parties, shopping, & trying to make sure that our friends, families, & kids have lots of “stuff” to do & presents to open – let’s just SLOW DOWN! RELAX! And ENJOY what this season is really about. As my daughter Brianna says, “Christmas is about 3 things: 1) Celebrating Jesus, 2) Spending time with family, & 3) Helping those in need!” DANG! I love that girl! THAT pretty much sums it up!

BTW: That’s a lot of what our December message series “The Christmas Blues – On a Mission from God” is all about. We’re using the Blues Brothers to talk about what Christmas is really all about & how God has a mission for each of our lives that we are to be pursuing. (Also, check out our “Christmas Blues promo video here – It is too funny & good!). Don’t miss this series kicking off next Sunday Dec. 2nd. It will run each Sunday in December & on Christmas Eve.

This “Serve the World: Christmas Offering is ALL about Brianna’s #3 – Helping those in need. I ask that you join us in helping provide for Children’s homes, Homeless shelters & struggling families locally, as well as, provide food, schooling, immunizations, medical care & the love of Jesus Christ in parts of the world where the average family lives on less than $2 a day. As well this offering will fund the local mission work, community service days (Faith in Actions), & benevolence assisting struggling families with financial needs & counseling. Our goal is to raise $30,000. (This is above & beyond the approx. $30,000 it takes to run our church & preschool each month) This is also a rather modest amount considering the incredible amount of work we do with this amount of money.

Please join us in praying that God will FAR surpass our goal! Please pray about cutting back on the “stuff” of Christmas – give your best gift to Jesus this Christmas – & help us truly “Serve the World” in Jesus’ name in 2012!  In addition to giving on Sunday mornings at Eagle Pointe – you can also give generously towards this effort by GIVING ONLINE.

We are also encouraging our church family that if they feel the need to buy Christmas gifts – then let your Christmas Gifts be “on a mission for God”. We are offering “Serve the World Gift Certificates” that can be given as gifts & let people know that rather than get them a gift they probably don’t need – that a certain amount had been given to those less fortunate in their name.

As well, on Jan. 21 we are doing a BIG Benefit Concert to raise money to buy land & build an orphanage in Haiti. We are encouraging people to buy tickets for others as Christmas gifts. This way they are giving a great gift of tickets to an amazing concert & helping build an orphanage in Haiti at the same time.

Lastly, I hope & pray that you will help us make this a Christmas to remember!

Churches – Just Say ‘YES’ To Halloween… & Zombies!

Many of us have grown up hearing a very wide-range of views relating to Halloween – especially from Christians & Churches. Please take a minute & read this post & watch the videos below to see how we view & “use” Halloween, in some very fun ways, to reach people for Jesus.

Being that we have so many people coming to Eagle Pointe from all different church backgrounds & no church backgrounds – I get asked quite often around this time of year – “What is your’s & the church’s view of Halloween?”  This question comes up a lot especially since our church does a huge pumpkin patch, as well as, student ministry costume party & an event for families in our community called “Trick-or-Treat Street”. I always love this question because I never know what that person’s view is or how they will respond to my view.

So, here is my attempt at conveying mine/our view of this…

1) Yes – Halloween started out thousands of years ago as a Celtic celebration steeped in witchcraft – but that certainly is not what 99% of people equate it with today. For most, it is an excuse to dress up, be silly, & have fun.

2) Did you know? Christmas started as a Nordic winter solstice celebration steeped in witchcraft as well – but we Christians “hijacked” it and used it to celebrate the birth of Christ. (which most scholars believe was actually around April)

3) I propose we (Christians) hijack Halloween!

4) Many of you know that I am ALL about reaching people who are disconnected from God & helping change the way they think about church – so with that in mind…

5) There is no other day of the year that almost every one of my neighbors are coming to my front door!!! (think about it)  SO – I’m camping out on my front porch with a huge bowl of candy, thermos of coffee for the adults, & invite cards to my church!!! Let the hijacking begin!

6) As for our “Trick-or-Treat Street” – What a great opportunity to reach out to the families in our community, give them a great, fun, & safe family experience (they’re going trick-or-treating anyways), & let them know about what God is doing here at Eagle Pointe. We’ll have theme rooms set up, about 40 characters for kids & families to get their pictures taken with, & giving out A BUNCH of candy to the kids, & invites to church. For more info click here Trick-or-Treat Street & be sure to watch the 2 promo videos below. (BTW: Please donate bags of candy for this & if you can help with building theme rooms, promotion, etc email Lisa Skelly right away)  Let the hijacking begin!

7) For me – Halloween is a great excuse for me to go pillage & plunder my neighborhood for candy with my kids!

BTW: Just wait until you see my costume I’ll be wearing at our “Trick-or-Treat Street” & Halloween night!

Oh yeah – 1 more thing – Trick or Treat? (Check out these videos below)

How to Talk to Teens/Kids about Sex

We are in the middle of our “Parenthood” teaching series at Eagle Pointe church. So far, we’ve been talking about how to give our kids a secure foundation; how we need to talk with them about sex; how to communicate our love to them in a way they understand. The next 2 parts are – how to give them stable authority & how to give them a strong spiritual reality.

If you have missed any of this series – please GO HERE where you can watch, listen, or podcast online.

I had A LOT of requests after last week’s message on “How to Talk to kids/teens about Sex”, to give parents more tools to help them have these conversations. As I said during that message, this is not a one time talk but rather a lifetime conversation. So, in order to give all of us more tools & help us keep this conversation going…

Hare are some tools to help…

1) Here are transcripts from a 5 week teaching series I did for teenagers called “Good Sex”. I encourage you to read & re-read them over & use them as a guide to help you in these conversations… Good Sex – Part 1Good Sex – Part 2Good Sex – Part 3Good Sex – Part 4Good Sex – Part 5

2) Here is the video of the message I did as part of our “Parenthood” teaching series at Eagle Pointe that will be helpful as well… (below)
